[Drama Review #12] - Resurrection 부활 復活

The twelfth drama is called Resurrection 부활. This was a drama recommended to me by a friend from high school. When I saw that the main actor was Uhm Tae Woong, I was pretty excited. I had already seen his acting ability in Gumiho and was impressed. When I searched online to examine the synopsis, the storyline gave me chills. It was a drama with a romantic story buried into a complex but thrilling mystery.

Resurrection tells the story of Yoo Ganghyuk (Uhm Tae Woong) who was separated from his identical twin Yoo Shinhyuk when their father was killed in a car accident. Ganghyuk, emotionally damaged, is unable to remember his name and family. A mysterious man takes him to another man, who adopts Ganghyuk. His adoptive father gives him the name Seo Haeun. His name is the opposite of his adoptive sister's name, Seo Eunha (Ha Ji Min), who he ends up falling in love with. Haeun grows up to become a cop, with his father's badge as the only memento of his forgotten past. While investigating an alleged suicide case, he discovers the existence of his twin brother. However, Haeun's actions ends up aggravating some suspicious individuals. When Haeun finally meets his brother Shinhyuk, the individuals accidentally kill Shinhyuk, mistaking Shinhyuk for Haeun. Tormented, Haeun decides to assume his twin brother's character and take revenge on the criminals that killed his brother.

As the drama progresses, Haeun slowly reveals that he isn't Shinhyuk. He can't copy Shinhyuk's personality exactly, especially since he hardly got to know his brother. It's funny to see how everyone else initially dismisses the change of character so easily. At times, it's heartbreaking to see Haeun's interactions with Eunha. Eunha tries to cope with the fact that Haeun is supposedly dead, but still convinced that the man who claims he is Shinhyuk is actually the Haeun she knows and loves. Uhm Tae Woong does an absolutely fantastic job in portraying these two different characters in the beginning of the drama. After that midpoint, he displays an amazing acting ability with the way he shows how Haeun is slowly losing his mind and soul as he continues to set up his revenge. It makes you feel sorry for him and like Eunha, wishes he could stop. In a way, his love for Eunha is the only thing left to keep him from losing his human nature. Lastly, this drama also exposes the corrupt nature of those with power. For any detective that explores too deep into a case, those powerful individuals will do anything to keep that case buried. It is the fear that if the details of their corruption are revealed to the public, all their ambitions would be absolutely destroyed. Even worse, their public image will be tarnished. Of course, in such dramas, the corrupt criminals are always exposed and justice is served. These types of plot lines are some of my absolute favorite stories.

Resurrection's soundtrack is pretty nice. My favorite track is "Da Shi 다시". It's a ballad with powerful vocals. The song itself comes up mostly during the scenes with Haeun and Eunha. The title track "Moo Jwe 무죄" is also a really good song. It is also a ballad track with a really nice piano melody.

Although I did not know at the time, I found out recently that Lee Yeon Hee played Haeun's half-sister. Lee Yeon Hee is an actress from SM Entertainment and most noted for being a possible member of the popular girl group SNSD/Girl's Generation. I'm a fan of Lee Yeon Hee, as I find her to be very pretty. It very surprising that she is close to my own age. I highly recommend this drama. The drama is such an amazing mystery from start to finish. At times, it seems like an action thriller but without any excessive gun fights. The love story is good too, since you already know from the start that Haeun and Eunha are meant to be together. The focus of the drama is about Haeun's revenge and not about some other third party getting involved between Haeun and Eunha. This drama is certainly a good one to start with for those who don't particularly enjoy a heavy romantic storyline but do enjoy a good detective story.
